Drogheda has jumped seven places in the IBAL Anti-Litter League in the last six months.
There was widespread shock in June 2022 when Drogheda sank to 39th out of the 40 towns and cities in the league making it officially the dirtiest town in Ireland.
This served as a wakeup call which led to a concerted campaign by Drogheda Tidy Towns, Love Drogheda and many other concerned organisations and individuals to tackle the problem of littering in Drogheda.
They have all played their part in improving the look of the town, in various ways including litter picks, street cleaning, graffiti removal, installing new lighting, new planting and re-painting.
Speaking at the Council Borough meeting in Millmount this evening, the Chair of Drogheda Tidy Towns, Kevin Callan, said the results were a massive lift for the town.
“We have come from being graded as the second dirtiest town in Ireland a year ago and six months ago to come up two grades of marking where we are now only moderately littered” he said.
“This means we have gone from seriously littered, littered to moderately littered and now we are only four places below Killarney. We have also retained our Gold Medal for a fifteenth year in a row which is no small feat considering the size of the town and the amount of work needed.”
“The effort now will focus on getting the entire town to the grade of ‘Clean to European Norms’ and we will be pushing hard to achieve this.”
“The work of Louth County Council, Drogheda and District Chamber, Love Drogheda BIDS with Drogheda Tidy Towns with so many volunteers has changed the results substantially and this year if we work as hard as we have been doing, we can make even more progress.
We would encourage everyone who can give any time to link in with Drogheda Tidy Towns on social media or by text to 0871155366 if they would like to get involved in anyway.
The cleanest town in Ireland, for the second year running, is Naas.
