There is good news for drivers, walkers, and farmers today after the Government agreed to spend an extra €364,298 for local road improvement works in County Louth.
This comes on top of the €373,479 euros previously allocated and brings the total amount to €737,777 euros.
The money will be allocated to Louth County Council under the Local Roads Improvement Scheme as it is called which means it can only be used to improve accessibility to non-public roads and laneways of which there are many around the county.
Senator Alison Comyn said she was delighted to be informed of the new roads allocation by her Fianna Fail colleague, the Minister for Community and Rural Affairs, Darragh Calleary.
She said:”We must continue to invest in our non-public roads across our country. Access to rural houses and farms alongside the access to outdoor amenities here across Louth is crucial for our county.
“This substantial funding will help enhance the accessibility to those amenities for locals and visitors alike.
“The investment will improve access to rural homes, farms and outdoor amenities across the county. This will be most welcome news for the people of County Louth.
“I will work closely with Louth County Council and the local elected representatives tom ensure delivery of the works by the end of the year.”
Allocations per county is based on the level of work each local authority can finish by the end of the year.
The Local Improvement Scheme has seen over 20,000 landowners and rural residents benefit and over 4800 roads upgraded since the scheme was introduced in 2017.
The Government is spending 30 million on the scheme this year almost double what it initially allocated for local roads.
A total of 170 million has been spent on the scheme since it was created eight years ago.
The local roads which qualify are non-public roads leading to important community amenities such as graveyards, beaches, piers, and mountains plus non-public roads providing access to parcels of land of which two or more are owned or occupied by different persons one of which must be for agricultural or harvesting purposes.
