Heather Humphries, T.D., Minister for Rural & Community Development, has announced funding of €2.8m for the redevelopment of the North Louth coastal village of Omeath.
“The project will regenerate the heart of the village with improvements to the public realm that will build on the huge tourist potential of the village with the Great Eastern Greenway running through its heart” a Council spokesperson said.
“The planned works will enhance the experience of people visiting and living in the village with the increased prioritisation of pedestrians and traffic calming measures, thus creating a far more environmentally sustainable village.
“The combination of these improvements and the greenway will create a highly attractive visiting experience for walkers and cyclists alike, allowing them the opportunity to really enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area and create opportunities for businesses in the village to cater for the anticipated increased numbers stopping off in the village to enjoy all that this unique location has to offer.
“Before the application was made there was extensive consultation with the local community and a wide variety of stakeholders including state agencies such as Fáilte Ireland who lent their support to the project.
The Chief Executive of Louth County Council, Joan Martin, said “This funding allows Louth County Council to build on the huge tourist potential of the county and in particular the village of Omeath with its stunning natural beauty and key location on the Great Eastern Greenway.
“This project will enhance the lives of the people living in the village and surrounding area and bring much needed economic development that will sustain the village into the future.”
