Trim Castle closure will begin on 1st November 2026, with the historic Co Meath landmark shutting to visitors for essential mechanical and electrical upgrade works.
The Office of Public Works says the project will include the rewiring of the historic Co Meath landmark and is required to support its continued safe operation and long-term conservation.
The official Heritage Ireland listing now confirms that the castle will be closed for works throughout that period.
The OPW expects the main works to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
Castle set for major role in 2027
The Trim Castle closure is expected to remain in place until 1st April 2027, ahead of the site’s planned role in the European Year of the Normans, in which Trim Castle is expected to play a prominent role.
The initiative marks 1,000 years since the birth of William the Conqueror and will include cultural and heritage events across several European countries.
Trim Castle is already listed as a location for Norman Ireland: Footprints across the Sea, an outdoor photographic exhibition planned for May and June 2027 featuring Norman sites from across Ireland.
Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW Kevin “Boxer” Moran said:
“Trim Castle is one of Ireland’s most important medieval monuments and is an outstanding example of the Norman heritage that has shaped so much of our historic landscape. The essential works commencing in November are important to ensure that the Castle continues to be safely operated and conserved for future generations. I look forward to returning in Spring 2027 to reopen the Castle as we celebrate the European year of the Normans 2027.
“I am also pleased to see the Trim Castle Visitor Centre project progressing well, with interpretation consultants now appointed and the project moving towards tender stage. I look forward to great progress at Trim Castle in 2027 on all fronts.”
Visitor centre project progressing
The OPW is also progressing plans for a dedicated Trim Castle Visitor Centre at the historic Market House beside the castle.
Procurement documents show that the interpretation project includes the development of a new exhibition and visitor experience across Trim Castle, its environs, the Market House and the former guide accommodation building.
According to the OPW, interpretation consultants were appointed in September and prequalification notices for contractors on the main construction project are due to follow.
Construction on the new visitor centre is currently envisaged to begin in summer 2027.
Trim Castle remains open under its normal seasonal arrangements until the closure begins on 1st November.
