Councillor Kevin Callan has described the daily traffic delays on the Dublin Road, the dual carriageway and the junction onto St Mary’s Bridge as “carnage” and that the time has come to take steps to alleviate what he says is amongst the worst traffic congestion in the country.
“This issue has not only gone on for years but in recent times has further deteriorated and everyone who is getting stuck in it knows that there are multiple reasons” the Deputy Mayor said.
Having spoken with bus operators, residents and motorists who use the route daily as well as pedestrians and cyclists who observe the delays, Cllr. Callan says that a number of issues have been raised with him which include;
- Traffic Light Sequencing
- Garda intervention at peak times for free flow
- Creating bus bays off road to allow traffic pass during stops
- Mini-roundabouts at estates along the road
- The continued use of the John Street slipway which should not be closed to traffic as part of active travel plans.
“This issue which is impacting thousands of local residents and businesses on daily basis requires specific attention and I have requested the council sit down with the elected representatives and engineers to discuss measures to correct the delays.
“People have the right to live and commute to work in their town. Currently this traffic congestion is making travelling into Drogheda simply impossible.
“With no actions being successful in getting the toll lifted by our TDs and with the Obelisk Bridge being closed for essential works to prevent it falling into the river, we need to take action to free up traffic in any way we can.”
