The Vikings returning to the Boyne

If you pass through the front gates of Slane Castle on May 20th or 21st you will be transported back 1,000 years at the annual Boyne Valley Viking Experience.

Over 400 Vikings of all ages will be taking part and you will hear the battle cry of warriors and the sound of clashing steel when nearly 200 warriors measure their strength in single combat and group battles as teams of five compete with spears, axes, shields and swords to become Irish Champion.

You will see the spectacular landing of full-size longboats coming up the Boyne and landing warriors. Learn about ancient crafts such as weaving, pottery, blacksmithing, jewellery making, tanning, wood working and much more.

These craftsmen and women are passionate about their work and will answer all your questions. For the children there will be a treasure hunt where they follow the clues to discover lost Viking treasure. The young Vikings can also enjoy battle training and story-telling.

The 400 reenactors attending this year’s event come from all over Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, France, Poland, Czech Republic and elsewhere. They are set to entertain you and create an event even more spectacular than last year.

With a focus on as much historic accuracy as possible, you will be transported back in time into a Viking camp of 1000 years ago. With music on traditional instruments, stories of Viking gods and goddesses and many interesting treasures to explore, there will be plenty to discover.

Now in its third year, the Boyne Valley Viking experience is set to enthral visitors from all over Ireland and abroad and due to the positive response from 2022, it is again taking place in the beautiful grounds of Slane Castle.
