Status Orange Wind Warning for Louth as Storm Bram Approaches

Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange Wind Warning for Louth, in effect Tuesday, 9th December, from 11am to 7pm, as Storm Bram moves in.
Louth County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team has met and the Council’s Severe Weather Plan is now active.

What to Expect

Storm Bram is a multi-hazard weather event that will bring:

  • Very strong and gusty southerly winds
  • Gale force conditions near coasts
  • An elevated flood risk, especially in low-lying coastal areas

The warning coincides with very high spring tides which increases the likelihood of coastal flooding.

Local Flood and Tide Alerts

A High Tide Advisory is also in place for all coasts starting from midnight tonight. Wellington Quay in Drogheda is expected to flood during high tide. Drivers should use alternative routes at these times.

Possible Impacts

  • Flooding in coastal and low-lying areas
  • Wave overtopping
  • Difficult travel conditions
  • Debris and loose objects blown about
  • Disruption to outdoor events
  • Power outages

Why the Risk Is Higher

After a week of persistent rain, river levels are close to full and soils are saturated. High tides may slow or stop rivers from discharging into the sea. This can cause water to back up and increases the risk of flooding upstream in low-lying locations.

Safety Advice

  • Avoid coastal areas during the Orange wind warning
  • Do not drive through floodwater
  • Expect debris, strong crosswinds and poor visibility and allow extra travel time
  • Check on neighbours, older people and anyone who may need assistance
  • Keep mobile phones charged and prepare for possible power outages
  • Event organisers should consider cancelling events where necessary
  • Keep away from swollen rivers, streams and flooded riverbanks
  • Follow Irish Coast Guard advice: “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry”
