Congrats to the under 15s soccer team from St. Mary’s Diocesan School who won their North East Leinster League final against a brilliant Ardgillan side in blustery conditions yesterday, Thursday 2nd February.
The St Mary’s boys opened the scoring just before half-time through an excellent team move, which saw Harry Leonard feed the ball to Jamie O’Brien, who made no mistake with a calm and composed finish.
Shortly after half-time, Ardgillan equalised when a wind-assisted long ball bounced awkwardly and looped over the St. Mary’s keeper and into the net.

The St. Mary’s boys remained unphased however and kept battling hard in the second half, creating some great goal scoring opportunities, but there was nothing to separate both sides at the full-time whistle.
The game progressed to extra time, and the St. Mary’s boys found themselves ahead again when an excellent ball from midfield enforcer Alex Brady found Jamie O’Brien, who scored his and his team’s second goal of the game.
Ardgillan created some dangerous opportunities to equalise in the second half of extra time and almost succeeded. With the last play of the game, a brilliantly whipped in free kick just managed to evade the Ardgillan attackers and fortunately sailed out for a goal kick. The ref then blew the final whistle to end the game.

The St. Mary’s boys now progress to the Leinster Champions League competition having won their league and are still due to play their Leinster Cup quarter-final sometime after midterm.
Congrats again lads, and of course the team coaches, Ms. Matthews and Mr Mattimoe, hopefully it is the first trophy of many ðŸ’
