Ever since they were first established in 1989, Droichead Arts Centre has encouraged young people to become active in all types of artistic endeavours be it theatre, music, film, visual arts, opera, dance, comedy or literature.
The latest example of this encouragement is the Young Producers Programme (YPP) which brings together transition year (TY) students from six local schools to allow them to produce their own event for March 4th with the help of experienced facilitators.
Since their first get together in November the YPP group spent a few meetings just getting comfortable around each other and in January they began to plan an event.
“We started with brainstorming, spending two days on that. Then we voted on which idea we thought was best, which was revealed the week after” said spokesperson Richard Picar.
“Our original ideas took many different forms, and ultimately it turned out to be a music related event. Once we had decided what we wanted to do, we split ourselves into four different groups – production, programming, marketing and finance.
The event’s name is ‘The New Sound‘, which will take place on Saturday next, March 4th from 6-8 p.m. The New Sound will feature five or six different young artists/bands from the locality who will all play for 20 minutes each.
Participating schools are St. Marys, St. Josephs, Colaiste Na hInse, Drogheda Grammar School, Drogheda Educate Together, and Sacred Heart.
The purpose of The New Sound is to give young, aspiring musicians an opportunity to grow and gain confidence, as well as learn and have fun.
The programming team were in charge of reaching out to the bands while the production team will help on the day with equipment. Marketing will advertise the event and finance sorted out the budget.
Tickets for the event will cost €5 and are available at www.droichead.com
