The Drogheda Cycling Group has been campaigning for safer infrastructure for cycling, both as a pastime and as a means of transport, in the Drogheda and East Meath area for the past two years or so.
In that time they have managed to push the issue way up the agenda of the two local County Councils and indeed are expected to be making a presentation on the topic at the next Drogheda Borough meeting.
In the meantime, the group is holding a public meeting in the Barbican Centre in Fair Street on Tuesday 29th March at 7.30 PM to bring together all those who want to promote cycling as the main mode of transport for adults and children in Ireland’s largest town.
“This meeting is a chance for parents, students, ordinary workers to come together and develop a campaign to make Drogheda a cycling friendly town” said Chairperson Noel Hogan.
“To those who doubt it can ever happen I can only say that cycling friendly cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen were only a few decades ago choked with traffic.
“It was ordinary people coming together that made these cities healthier and safer places to live and work, and it will be the citizens of Drogheda who will turn it into Ireland’s most cycling friendly large town.”
Cycling Group Treasurer Daniel Danko said: “With the current rise in fuel prices it makes even more sense for cycling to be prioritised as a safe and cheap method of transport in our town.
“We want to see people enjoying the benefits of cycling for everyday trips to the shops, the office and so on. Cycling is so much more than just a sporting activity and the Drogheda Cycling group is committed to making Drogheda a cycle friendly town.”
