Public lighting in Moneymore broken since before Christmas

Aontu representative in Louth Michael O’Dowd has called for six public lights in Moneymore which have been broken since before Christmas to be fixed immediately.

“This must be some kind of unwelcome record for an estate in Drogheda” he said.

O’Dowd has forwarded the details of the broken lights, which he noticed during a recent night-time survey, on to the relevant authorities for action.

“It will be cheaper to fix the lights rather than to give everyone a torch to get safely around the area “he joked.

“The persistence of broken public lights within the Moneymore Estate, with some remaining out of service since before Christmas, presents a serious safety hazard for residents and visitors alike, it not only diminishes visibility but also heightens the risk of accidents and crime during the evening hours.

“Furthermore, the prolonged outage is a significant inconvenience on those walking the area after dark. Urgent action is imperative to address these issues, as restoring proper lighting infrastructure is essential to ensure the security and well-being of the community.

“Another problem that I have notified to the Council is that at the entrance to the estate, the unchecked growth of trees poses a dual challenge by obstructing visibility and encroaching upon public lighting fixtures.

“The overgrown branches not only obscure the lights but also create potential hazards for pedestrians and drivers entering the neighbourhood. Trimming back these overgrown trees is also essential to enhance safety.

“For far too long, Moneymore has been ignored when it comes to simple environmental issues, let’s get it right going forward.”
