Louth TD Paula Butterly has welcomed the sanctioning of the first tranche of new special classes for the upcoming school year.
The Minister for Education and Youth has confirmed that 168 new special classes across 159 schools have been approved nationwide, marking an important step in supporting children with additional educational needs.
Deputy Butterly said she was particularly pleased to see that Marymount Primary School, Drogheda, and St Mary’s College, Dundalk, have each been approved for a new special class as part of the announcement.
She said the decision represents very positive news for families, pupils and school communities, adding that special classes play a vital role in ensuring children with additional needs receive the support, care and education they require in an appropriate setting.
While welcoming today’s announcement, the Deputy said she is hopeful that this will be followed by further approvals for schools in Louth in the weeks ahead.
“I know from listening to parents, teachers and principals just how great the demand is for additional special classes across Louth. While today’s sanctions are very welcome, there is still more work to do, and I am hopeful that more schools in County Louth will receive approval in the coming weeks.”
The Fine Gael TD added that the need for special classes continues to grow year on year and that planning and investment in this area must remain a priority.
“These classes are not just needed, they are essential, and they make a real and lasting difference to children’s lives.”
