Over €5.5 Million in Grants Return 103 Vacant Homes to Use in Louth

More than €5.6 million in government funding has helped bring 103 previously vacant or derelict homes back into use across Louth.

The figures were released by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, as part of the latest update on the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant.

Since the scheme’s launch in July 2022, 333 applications have been made by Louth homeowners, with 232 approvals and €5.66 million paid out to date.

Nationally, over €200 million has been disbursed, returning 3,672 homes to active residential use. Q3 2025 marked the scheme’s strongest period yet, with grant payments up 126% on last year.

Minister Browne said vacant and derelict properties “not only represent missed opportunities to provide much-needed homes, but they also undermine the vibrancy and liveability of our town centres.”

He added that the Government has expanded the Living City Initiative and introduced a new Derelict Property Tax to replace the current levy, to further encourage property owners to act.
