Gardaí are urging motorists across Louth, Meath and the wider country to take extra care on the roads as a major Roads Policing operation continues throughout the October bank holiday weekend.
The operation began on Thursday, 22nd October and will continue until Tuesday, 27th October.
One person died as a result of a road traffic collision on the first day of the operation, bringing the number of road deaths in Ireland so far this year to 152.
Gardaí are carrying out Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints alongside regular high-visibility policing checkpoints throughout the weekend.
A total of 18 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs since the operation began.
More than 650 drivers were also detected for speeding offences during the first day of the operation.
More than 95 drivers were detected either holding a mobile phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt.
Extra care around pedestrians and cyclists
An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority are asking all road users to play their part in keeping roads safe throughout the bank holiday weekend.
Motorists are being reminded to take particular care around vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
Cyclists and pedestrians are also being encouraged to make sure they are clearly visible in darker conditions and to remain aware of their surroundings.
Gardaí are reminding drivers to slow down, stay within speed limits, never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, wear a seatbelt and avoid using mobile devices while behind the wheel.
They said road safety needs to remain a priority for everyone, with all road users having a part to play in helping people reach their destination safely this weekend.
