Nitrates Derogation secured for three years, bringing relief for Louth Farmers

Louth farmers are set to benefit from the continued availability of the nitrates derogation, according to Fine Gael TD Paula Butterly.

Deputy Butterly welcomed confirmation from Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon that Ireland has secured a three-year implementing decision from the European Commission, allowing the derogation to continue.

She said securing the agreement had been a key priority for Fine Gael, adding that the decision outlines conditions for the derogation, including compliance with the Habitats Directive.

Deputy Butterly also acknowledged Minister Heydon’s efforts, including bringing Commissioner Roswall to Ireland last November to see first-hand how important the derogation is to Irish farmers.

She said the Commissioner’s engagement with farming groups and her visit to a typical Irish family farm helped highlight the sustainability of the family farm model, where livestock are outdoors for much of the year.

Improving water quality remains central to retaining the derogation, she noted, adding that farmers are committed to meeting environmental responsibilities and continuing to make progress.

Deputy Butterly said work will continue with farmers to protect water quality and secure the derogation beyond the current decision.
