New Changing Places facility opens at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital

Changing Places Ireland has welcomed the official opening of a new Changing Places Toilet at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, marking an important step forward in accessibility and inclusion for people with complex disabilities.

The new facility, located just inside the main entrance near reception, provides essential equipment and space to support individuals with additional needs in a safe, dignified, and practical way. Changing Places Toilets go beyond standard accessible toilets by offering features such as an adult-sized changing bench, hoist system, and space for carers.

Changing Places Ireland would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank Sean and Joanne Traynor, along with their daughter Jody, whose determination and advocacy played a central role in bringing this project to life. Their efforts have helped ensure that people with complex needs can access healthcare services with greater dignity and respect.

The organisation also recognises the important contributions of Millie Gray and James McGarry, Access Officer at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, for their support, commitment, and work in helping to deliver this much-needed facility.

Speaking following the opening, Annette Monaghan from Changing Places Ireland said:
“This is a significant step forward in supporting people with complex disabilities and their families to access healthcare services with dignity and respect. Facilities like this make a real difference, ensuring people can attend appointments and participate in everyday life with greater comfort and confidence.

We are very grateful to the hospital management and staff for their leadership and commitment, and to everyone who worked together to make this facility a reality. It is a strong example of what can be achieved through collaboration and a shared commitment to inclusion.”

Changing Places Ireland also acknowledged all those involved in delivering the project, including advocates, planners, and the wider community, whose combined efforts helped bring the facility to completion.

The organisation praised the hospital for setting a strong example in accessibility and expressed hope that more healthcare providers across Ireland will follow this lead.

Changing Places Ireland continues to advocate for the expansion of Changing Places Toilets nationwide to ensure that everyone can access public spaces with dignity, safety, and comfort.
