Two local beaches popular with sea swimmers are to get new double changing cabins.
Over €20,000 has been allocated to pay for badly needed amenities at the blue flag Port beach Clogherhead and at Shelling Hill beach,Templetown.
There has been a massive rise in the number of people sea swimming in the northeast since Covid.
The Little Stand beach, Clogherhead, Salterstown in Annagassan, and Bettystown/Laytown beaches are regularly used daily by swimmers.
Welcoming the latest funding the Fine Gael Lourth TD Paula Butterly said: “We are so lucky to have facilities like these at Clogherhead and Templetown, and this funding will allow people to reap the rewards of all the benefits associated.
“I have been a strong advocate for improving amenities at our blue flag beaches here in Louth, and this funding will help to improve the experience for beachgoers throughout the constituency, encouraging new participants both young and old to stay active and swim regularly.”
“This is a smart investment in public health infrastructure in Louth. This funding will ensure that more people, regardless of age or ability can safely enjoy Louth natural waters.”
This is the second year of the scheme which aims to make Ireland’s approved outdoor swimming locations more accessible, enabling more people to enjoy the health benefits of outdoor swimming.
Swimming locations in 17 local authority areas will each receive allocations which total €330,000, supporting the provision and upgrade of handrails, swim shelters, access ladders, safety notice boards, shower facilities and beach wheelchairs.
The €20,000 granted to Louth, will be used for the purchase and installation of three movable double beach changing cabins at Clogherhead Port and Shelling Hill Beach in Templetown.
These enhancements will make these approved locations more accessible, particularly for people with reduced mobility, and will build on the progress made since the scheme was introduced in 2024.
