Mother and daughter (9) cycling 200k for Cancer Society

Mother and daughter team Rhonda and Layla Byrne Tyson from Hand Street are a force to be reckoned with. When they decide to do something it gets done!

So, when Rhonda decided she was going to cycle 200kms during the month of October to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society you can be sure the target will be achieved and more than likely exceeded.

Rhonda hadn’t been on a bike for years but when she read about the Drogheda Cycling group’s social cycles on Drogheda Life she thought she’d give it a go.

So she got the old bike out of the shed, pumped up the tyres, gave the chain a squirt of oil and soon she had re-discovered the joy of cycling.

Now she hardly ever misses any of the Drogheda Cycling outings and most evenings she and nine-year-old Layla are having a great old time discovering the countryside around the Drogheda area.

“When I joined the Drogheda Cycling Group I didn’t realise how much I would enjoy it and the company is just great” Rhonda told Drogheda Life. “It’s also really fantastic to be spending so much time with Layla who is really enjoying getting out and about.”

“Then I thought that, while I’m at it, I might as well raise some funds for the Irish Cancer Society who are a charity very close to my heart.”

Rhonda explained that her mother, Josephine Byrne, died from cancer on September 23rd 2019 and she still misses her dreadfully.

“We were very close” Rhonda said. “She was the typical Irish Mammy, the whole family spent every Sunday together in her house and she would feed us all. Layla loved her Nan so much.”

The plucky pair are determined to complete their goal of 200kms before the end of the month although Rhonda is a bit concerned about the weather.

By Sunday last though, Rhonda had covered over 114K while Layla had pedalled a fantastic 74 kilometers and they have been out a couple of times since.
