In July this year Drogheda Life highlighted the plight of the Moneymore Childcare Centre which after 14 years of great service to the local community had to replace their kitchen and other items of equipment. In total they were looking at a bill of almost €70,000.
The local community rallied around and raised as much as they could but today the new kitchen came a big step closer to reality when it was announced that they are to receive €38,000 from the Department of Justice.
Welcoming the award, local Labour TD Ged Nash said; “Since the centre was set up by visionary local community leaders it has served children and families in the area exceptionally well.
“Last summer the staff pleaded for financial support to enable them to refurbish the kitchen and to allow the centre to bring the kitchen up to a higher standard.
“I was delighted to support their case for funds through representations to the Council and also via various government departments.
“It is tremendous that as a result of the Geiran Plan and the work of the new Drogheda Implementation Board which I hope will soon welcome direct representation from the community sector in the town, that the Department of Justice (the lead Department on the plan) has identified €38,000 that they will allocate to the Moneymore Childcare Centre.
“This is a really encouraging development and I want to thank Lisa, the centre manager and congratulate her and her team for their work on this and indeed the Implementation Board for delivering with the department.”
