Mid-Louth Councillors have once again pooled their Discretionary Budget and have purchased a specially adapted bike for Scoil Mhuire gan Smal in Kilsaran.
Each year Councillors are given a discretionary budget that they can donate to projects in their local areas but the six Mid-Louth Councillors have always pooled their money so it can support and further larger projects. One of those projects this year is the purchase of an adapted bicycle which has been donated to Scoil Mhuire gan Smal.
Sinn Féin Councillor Pearse McGeough said “one thing a child should always experience is something that we all take for granted, riding a bike. Unfortunately, that was an activity that some children were excluded from until the Louth Disability Cycling Club made it happen for them. To see volunteers cycling these children (and adults) in specially adapted bikes and to see the sheer joy on their faces is so special.
“Each year the six Councillors in Mid-Louth compile a shortlist of projects that will benefit as many people in the area as possible. This year, when I suggested a disability bicycle, it was unanimous and we were able to deliver the bicycle to the school this week.”
Cllr McGeough also thanked the management and staff of local business Standard Brands who through their fundraising efforts managed to provide storage and ramp facilities for the bicycle.
He also paid tribute to the Louth Disability Cycling Club saying “this small group of volunteers has made such a massive difference in the lives of children and adults with disabilities. We saw recently in Dundalk where they held the first ever ‘bike disco’ bringing together the whole community of all ages and all abilities. They are connecting the community in a different way which is inclusive and diversive and leaves no child behind.”
Cllr McGeough said “These bikes bring joy to so many that were previously left behind, now Scoil Mhuire gan Smal have their own.”
