Maintenance of lifebuoys vital to water safety – Nugent

Independent election candidate Peter James Nugent has highlighted the importance of maintaining lifesaving equipment along the Boyne and in surrounding coastal areas which he says are ripe for development of Marine Tourism.

To this end, Mr. Nugent has urged Louth County Council to maintain and replace life buoys in both Drogheda town and the coastal area, following recent incidents of damaged or stolen buoys.

“Findings revealed that some of the buoys’ ropes need to be replaced and clearly marked” he said.

“The community’s safety is supported by fantastic water units such as Drogheda Coast Guard, Boyne Fisherman’s Rescue, and Drogheda River Rescue, who are always available when needed.”

Mr. Nugent pointed out that, with the river Boyne and the proximity of coastal areas such as Clogherhead and Bettystown, Drogheda, Ireland’s largest Town is ripe for development of Marine Tourism options for which he will be exploring during 2024.

For any activity on the water, safety must always be uppermost in participant’s minds and Mr. Nugent said that funding is available to boat owners for safety equipment.

“Boat owners can apply for grant funding from the Marine Tourism Safety Scheme, which provides for purchasing and installing safety equipment such as life rafts, jackets, flares, first aid kits, bilge pumps, and safety manuals” he said.
