Louth Residents Encouraged to Help Build Ireland’s Largest Northern Lights Photo Archive

Tonight residents of Louth are being encouraged to submit their photos of the Northern Lights to help create Ireland’s largest archive of aurora images.

The initiative, led by Dr Alexandra Ruth Fogg of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), aims to collect photos taken across Ireland, particularly from dark-sky locations, following spectacular auroral displays in May and October 2024.

The project will use public submissions to map the colour, shape, and brightness of the aurora during those geomagnetic storms, offering valuable insight into space weather affecting Ireland.

Dr Fogg emphasised that widespread participation will help build one of the most comprehensive scientific datasets on the aurora ever compiled in Ireland.

Members of the public can learn more and upload their images www.dias.ie.
