Locals run a mile to raise much needed cash for the world’s poorest

For more and more local families each year Christmas is becoming a time when they consider the needs of other families around the world who are in perilous situations due to circumstances beyond their control such as war, natural disaster or famine.

Every Stephens Day for the past fourteen years a growing number of people have braved all types of weather to run a mile at the St Feichin’s GAA Grounds in solidarity with the poorest of the poor and to raise funds for the charity GOAL in support of their humanitarian work around the world.

The organisers of the Termonfeckin GOAL Mile were delighted with the turnout yesterday and would like to thank all the participants who completed their GOAL mile and made a donation. They also had many virtual participants who did the Mile in their own time.

After the relentless rain of Christmas Day, it was a beautiful sunny morning, so people were happy to get out and stretch their legs.

“It was a very relaxed affair, as we couldn’t have a big race as normal. But it was still a chance to meet up with family and friends in the outdoors at a socially distanced event” said one of the organisers, Michelle Hall.

“We would also like to thank St Feichin’s GAA Committee for the use of their grounds again. One of the reasons for our continued success is the wonderful amenities at this location, a large car park and a walkway around the perimeter.”

Termonfeckin GOAL Mile raised almost €1,300 in donations to help GOAL continue its work in countries experiencing extreme poverty, disaster and crisis.

Meanwhile, in Meadow View sports field, Boyne AC were holding their first ever GOAL Mile. They too had a good turnout and manged to raise over €1,300.

“It was the first time we held this event and had a great turnout on the day” a club spokesperson said.

“So far, we have raised over €1300 for GOAL, with more donations still to be collected. We had a lovely sunny morning, much to our relief after the rain of Christmas Day!”

Anyone who did not make out of bed early enough can of course still donate online at www.goalglobal.org.
