One of the biggest eyesores in East Meath, the old El Molino Hotel,in Julianstown – also called the Mill House – may finally be cleaned up for good.
A company named Casana Developments Ltd has applied to Meath County Council for 62 dwellings of terraced and apartments and duplex units on the site.
The actual old Mill House itself which is on a corner of the large derelict site will be restored, preserved and turned into a cafe, with a community room and apartments overhead.
There will also be a public walkway along the River Nanny as part of the development with seating and landscaping.
The dilapidated state of the old hotel and site has been a real cause of anger and annoyance among the people of Julianstown village for years.
The Julianstown Tidy Towns committee has welcomed the application which will clean up much of the local riverside area.
It said:” The applicants should be aware that given that the Old Mill sits within a conservation area, new buildings should be designed with sensitivity to the existing character and heritage of the area, prioritising high quality design that enhances the surrounding environment.
” This is a project which will enhance our village and give much needed employment and housing.”
Senator Sharon Keogan , Cllr Amanda Smith and Cllr Carol Lennon have been working with the development team and said they have agreed to host a public information meeting about the project in the coming weeks.
They will let villagers know as soon as the time, data and place for the meeting has been agreed.
