A Garda investigation is underway after what has now been confirmed as a criminal attack on an IPAS centre in Drogheda on Friday night.
Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said fireworks were thrown into the building, causing a fire that left several residents in hospital and 28 people without accommodation.
“I condemn the criminal attack on a building accommodating people applying for international protection in Drogheda last night,” the Minister said.
“Fireworks were thrown into the building causing a fire and putting lives at risk. This was a terrifying ordeal for the women and children living there, a number of whom were taken to hospital.
Alternative accommodation is now being sourced for the residents affected.
A full Garda investigation into this arson attack is underway. There will be serious consequences for those responsible.”
Emergency services were called to the scene on Georges Street shortly after 8pm. Firefighters rescued five people, including three children under the age of ten, from the top floor of the building.
The fire was brought under control by the Louth County Fire Service, but the building sustained significant damage, leaving all 28 residents displaced. Some were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for medical assessment.
The Chief Fire Officer confirmed that the Fire Service is working closely with An Garda Síochána, and that arson was not ruled out from the outset. Gardaí have since preserved the scene for technical examination and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
Mayor of Drogheda Cllr Michelle Hall urged the public to remain calm and to avoid speculation online.
“The people living in IPAS centres are human beings — families, parents, children — seeking safety and a better life,” she said.
“Let’s not give attention to content that fuels hate or misinformation. Instead, let’s choose empathy, truth, and solidarity.”
Local councillor Pio Smith confirmed that Louth County Council is working to source emergency accommodation for the affected residents, with support from An Garda Síochána.
Gardaí continue to appeal for information and have asked anyone with footage or details from the area around Georges Street between 8pm and 9pm on Friday night to contact Drogheda Garda Station.
