Home Alone named Ireland’s favourite Christmas movie in Festive film survey

With Christmas just around the corner, ODEON Cinemas commissioned a nationwide festive film survey that offers a revealing snapshot of Ireland’s favourite Christmas movies.

Home Alone has officially been crowned Ireland’s number one must watch Christmas movie, according to a new festive film survey that highlights the nation’s enduring love affair with seasonal classics. The research reveals that Christmas movie watching is not just a tradition but a full blown ritual for many households, with 44 percent of Irish people admitting they have watched their favourite festive film more than 20 times.

The survey shows that Christmas movie season properly begins in early December for half of the population, while 14 percent start as early as November. A committed 21 percent believe Christmas films are not seasonal at all and can be enjoyed at any time of year. This flexibility reflects Ireland’s relaxed and enthusiastic approach to festive viewing.

Home Alone secured 34 percent of the vote as the country’s favourite Christmas film, comfortably ahead of Love Actually, The Grinch and Elf. The popularity of the film extends beyond its lead character, with Kevin McCallister also named Ireland’s favourite Christmas movie character overall. The Wet Bandits, meanwhile, were voted the most memorable villains by 36 percent of respondents.

Rewatching festive films is clearly part of the magic. Alongside the 44 percent who have seen their favourite more than 20 times, a further 19 percent said they had watched theirs between 11 and 20 times. Only one person admitted to watching their favourite Christmas film just once.

Comedy emerged as Ireland’s favourite festive genre at 49 percent, followed closely by romantic comedies at 41 percent. Action films accounted for 9 percent, while a brave 1 percent opted for horror during the festive season.

One quote stood out above all others, with 61 percent choosing “Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal” as the most iconic Christmas movie line. When it comes to snacks, popcorn remains the firm favourite, followed by selection boxes and tubs of Roses.

Asked who they would most like to watch a Christmas classic with, 35 percent chose Nicola Coughlan as their top celebrity companion. Cinema trips remain a key part of the festive experience, with most people heading out at least once or twice over Christmas.
