Drivers are being warned to belt up as Gardai carry out a nationwide crackdown on people not wearing their seatbelts in cars, this Wednesday.
There will be moving random checkpoints around Drogheda and every other town and village to ensure that people are using their seat belts.
The move is part of the ongoing national safety campaign and to remind people that wearing your seat belt in your vehicle will save lives and is also the law.
The Gardai said: “Tomorrow Wednesday Gardai across the country will be conducting a seatbelt enforcement day of action.
“Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the risk of death and serious injury. Please wear your seatbelt as a driver and ensure that your passengers are wearing theirs also.
“Failure to wear a seatbelt can incur a penalty of 120 euros and 3 penalty points. Seat Belt saves lives, belt up.”
All car passengers in Ireland are legally required to wear a seat belt. Drivers are responsible for ensuring all passengers under 17 have their belt on. Adult passengers are responsible for their own belt use.
A total of one hundred and fifty people have been killed on Irish roads so far this year.
