Extra car park spaces at Clogherhead welcomed

The combined efforts and some “outside the box” thinking by local community representatives in Clogherhead and the Council have resulted in extra car parking spaces becoming available.

It is hoped that the new spaces will take some of the pressure off the seaside village during this summer of staycations.

Yesterday the Drogheda and District Services for Older People (DDS4OP) brought their popular rickshaw service to Clogher to trial the route of a new service from the new overflow car park at the tennis courts, down Crooked Street and out to the beach.

The experienced crew, under pilot Jackie Crinnion, encountered no major issues and it is hoped that the service will be up and running by next weekend.

Of course the trishaw can only accommodate two people at a time and it is intended for use mainly by the elderly or people with mobility issues.

However, local Councillor Declan Power is hopeful that by next weekend there will be a motorised street train service available that can take 25 passengers at a time.

Volunteers have been recruited to manage the day to day running of the scheme which will include full sterilisation of the seating between journeys.

Obviously this is a gesture in the right direction but people are also being asked to keep the access roads to the Lifeboat station clear to facilitate crews if they are called out.

“I want to thank Louth Co. Council for their assistance in recent weeks and the work with the new Crooked Street layout that will commence shortly, and I also want to thank the local Gardaí for their assistance with road markings and hitting disrespectful motorists with fines for illegal parking,” said Cllr Power.
