Drogheda United has been fined fifteen thousand euros by the League of Ireland and supporters banned from the club’s next four away matches over the recent disturbances at the derby game with Dundalk.
A 12 year old Drogheda fan was injured by the flares ignited and Dundalk’s new all weather pitch damaged.
Drogheda United supporters have also been banned from attending all fixtures in Oriel Park for the remainder of the season.
The tough sanctions were issued by the League of Ireland’s Independent Disciplinary Committee.
It said in a statement:” The League of Ireland and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) wish to remind all supporters that the possession, use or throwing of pyrotechnics inside grounds is strictly prohibited at all League of Ireland fixtures.
“Such conduct presents a serious and unacceptable risk to public safety, causes damage to facilities and will continue to result in disciplinary action.”
Drogheda United and the Gardai have initiated an investigation to identify the individuals responsible for lightening the flares and some violent scenes afterwards.The club also said they will be banned from united Park.
The Gardai also warned they will be cracking down on all illegal parking in the vicinity of United Park for tonight’s game against Shelborne. Fans have been warned not to block driveways or park on double yellow lines.
