Drogheda will shine once again this autumn as the Lú Festival of Light returns from 24th–27th October 2025, transforming the town into an open-air gallery of story, spectacle, and light.
Inspired by Ireland’s ancient myths and modern legends, this year’s festival brings to life tales of Cú Chulainn and Ferdia, The Morrigan, and Queen Maeve’s Táin march, alongside a glowing tribute to Drogheda’s own people and achievements. Through breathtaking light shows, immersive installations, and soundscapes, Drogheda’s streets will become a living canvas of creativity and culture.
With four shows per hour from 7pm–9.30pm daily, visitors can explore key heritage sites brought to life, including:
- St Peter’s Church, where digital mapping will create dazzling effects across stonework and stained glass.
- The Abbey, retelling the story of The Morrigan, the shapeshifting goddess of war and fate.
- St Laurence’s Gate, setting the stage for the legendary battle between Cú Chulainn and Ferdia.
Cllr Michelle Hall, Mayor of Drogheda, said: “This October, Drogheda will once again shine as the heart of Ireland’s storytelling tradition. From the legends of Cú Chulainn to the magic of the Morrigan, our streets will come alive with light, sound, and myth. I invite everyone to experience the wonder and be part of something truly unforgettable.”
Trevor Connolly of Love Drogheda BID added: “This festival is more than just light – it’s storytelling on the canvas of our built heritage. We are proud to be home to Ireland’s best Urban Animation Festival.”
Now in its fourth year, the festival continues to deliver major cultural and economic benefits. Louth County Council Chief Executive David Conway said: “Each year the Lú Festival of Light brings thousands of visitors to Drogheda, supporting businesses, inspiring creativity, and strengthening bonds through shared storytelling. Its impact is felt long after the lights dim.”
Audiences are encouraged to dress up for the Opening Ceremony and Spooks Parade on 24th October at 6.15pm, West Street, setting the tone for a weekend of celebration.
