Drogheda Tidy Towns Community Appreciation Night

Drogheda Tidy Towns are holding a Community Appreciation night on Wednesday November 16th in the D Hotel, Drogheda.

This is an opportunity to thank people for their great support to the work of Drogheda tidy towns over the last year.

On the night, people will hear presentations of the ongoing work from key stakeholders such as Louth County Council, Drogheda Chamber of Commerce and Love Drogheda BIDS along with a speaker on Biodiversity and information available from the Louth Council Community team and Local Community Gardaí.

“We have a tremendous list of opportunities identified in our 5 year Tidy Towns plan which was launched in April this year” said spokesperson Gerry Leydon.

“New and existing volunteers are encouraged to come along to the D Hotel on the 16th for 7.30 pm to meet and learn more.

“There is a great opportunity working together to make our wonderful town of Drogheda be the very best it can be”.

The five-year strategic plan and the Glen biodiversity project, both supported with funding from Louth Leader and Louth County Council, were the major Tidy Town projects in 2022.

The Glen improvements included the complete clearing and replanting of the glen bank with a bio diverse range of native hedgerow, shrubbery, trees, and wildflowers etc.

Many other improvements throughout the park included the addition of bee hotels, some orchard areas with a range of fruit and other trees,  knee rail fencing , upgrade of the park entrances with trees and flag poles and as a final step, the group will very soon be adding new biodiversity and information signage.

Drogheda Tidy Towns is a voluntary group whose mission is to improve the local environment and make Drogheda a better place to live, work and visit. Each year, on behalf of the people of Drogheda, they submit an entry for the SuperValu National Tidy Towns Competition.

The submission includes the work of all involved in making Drogheda a better place and it truly takes such a major collective effort to be successful.

At the national Tidy Towns awards ceremony in the RDS on Friday 28th October, it was announced that Drogheda retained its gold medal in for the 15th year, increasing it points in all 8 judging categories. The adjudicator acknowledged the hard work of the town and noted the evident progress which was achieved.

Drogheda received negative publicity earlier this year due with issues highlighted in IBAL reports. This prompted an amazing reaction among local people who have who given of their time selflessly and joined the fight back with great commitment.

This together with the ongoing work with other stakeholders including Louth County Council, Drogheda and District Chamber and Love Drogheda BIDs are starting to make a real difference.

Cllr Kevin Callan, Chairperson of Drogheda Tidy Towns said: “When we all pull together and work together there is no limit to what we can achieve as a community. “
