Drogheda Spring Clean shows what can happen when Councils cooperate

One of the outcomes from the first meeting of Drogheda and East Meath Councillors recently was a Spring-clean of the area which was carried out by volunteers over the weekend.

All over East Meath and South Drogheda residents and communities came together in a joint clean-up of the area.

Meath County Councillor Elaine MCGinty, whose suggestion it was, said that she was delighted that both Meath and Louth County Councils took her idea of a joint clean up on board and worked very well together in co-ordinating everything.

“It was a great opportunity for people to come together to spruce up their local area and with the springtime sunshine making a welcome return it’s been lovely to see Drogheda and East Meath looking so well ” she said.

“Many thanks to both Louth and Meath County Councils, V&W Recycling for facilitating the collection of bags, gloves, litter pickers and saplings and a big thank you to all the communities, schools and residents that turned out to get behind the initiative.”

“This weekend wasn’t just about a clean-up but affording people the opportunity to come together and talk about the common issues that affect us all. “

On the Louth side, Councillor Kevin Callan said that the weekend long operation was “a massive push in the fight against illegal dumping in and around Drogheda.”

He added that the coordinated Spring Clean had already seen a substantial impact in the overall appearance of the town.

The event, which had the support of Drogheda Tidy Towns, Drogheda Chamber of Commerce, The Love Drogheda BIDS group and many other community and voluntary groups has built on the efforts to date of the Tidy Towns Committee who have been pushing back on the recent IBAL findings which rated the town as low in terms of littering.

Councillor Callan, who is chair of Drogheda Tidy Towns, offered the thanks of the committee to everyone who took part.

“Each and every person who has given their time, put their shoulder to the wheel and helped is extremely appreciated” he said.

“This is no small task and the effort must continue. This weekend further builds on all of the work to date and I and the committee sincerely thank every volunteer. We will continue to push back on illegal dumping but we are already starting to see results.”

Cllr Callan also reminded people to check their five year plan for the town at www.DroghedaTidyTowns.com and to put their views and opinions and feedback into where efforts can be focused.
