Drogheda puppetry events will take place across the town this Thursday and Friday, with street performance, a workshop, and a family Sock Puppet Show on the programme
The programme is being organised by My Streets Ireland in conjunction with Louth County Council and begins on Thursday, 29th October with Harkets Puppetry taking to the streets of Drogheda.
The street performance will bring puppet characters, humour and live performance into the town centre for passers-by to enjoy.
Puppetry workshop with Niamh Lawlor
On Friday morning, 30th October, puppeteer Niamh Lawlor will lead a special workshop in conjunction with Ablevision.
The workshop will explore the creativity and techniques involved in bringing puppets to life, with participants getting an opportunity to explore storytelling and puppetry through hands-on activity.
Lawlor is a founder and Artistic Director of Púca Puppets and has worked extensively as a puppet maker, performer, director and designer.
Sock Puppet Show at Drogheda Library
The programme continues at 2pm on Friday with a Sock Puppet Show at Drogheda Library.
Booking is essential for the family-friendly event and places can be secured by contacting Drogheda Library on 041 987 6162.
Michael O’Dowd of My Streets Ireland said the events were an opportunity to give something back to people who have supported the organisation.
“It’s great to give back to the people who have continuously supported us,” he said.
“My Streets Ireland has always been about celebrating the people, places and stories that make Drogheda special. We wanted to bring something different into the town, something that would put smiles on faces, encourage creativity and give families a chance to enjoy a little bit of magic together.
“Puppetry is such a wonderful art form because it appeals to everyone, regardless of age. Whether it’s discovering an unexpected puppet performance on the street, taking part in a workshop or enjoying a show in the library, there’s something here for everyone.
“We’re delighted to be working in conjunction with Louth County Council to bring these events to Drogheda, and we hope people will come along, get involved and enjoy themselves.”
