Drive Safe: Gardaí Announce Increased Checkpoints for Bank Holiday Weekend

The Gardai will be carrying out a major traffic enforcement operation nationwide on the roads this Bank Holiday Week in a bid to save lives

This will include mobile checkpoints across the motorways and roads around counties Louth and Meath.
 
Drivers are urged not to drink- drive or drive after taking drugs, and there will be regular breath tests at all Garda checkpoints either late at night or the next morning.
 
Research has shown that many fatal crashes occur the morning after.
 
People are also urged not to be speeding and drive within the speeding limits on whatever route they are on and also not to be driving while using your mobile phone.
 
The Gardai warned:” Bank Holiday weekends are one of the busiest periods on Irish roads.
 
They are also one of the periods during which road users are at the highest risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road traffic collision.
 
“To date this year 94 people have lost their lives in road traffic collisions on Irish roads.
 
“An Garda Siochana is appealing to all those that will be taking to the roads this long weekend to slow down, take extra caution and to give your driving your full attention.”
 
According to the Road Safety Authority 14 people were killed on the roads in the north east in 2023, seven in Louth and seven in Meath.
 
A total of 174 people lost their lives on the roads in 2024. The worst counties for road deaths last year were Dublin,23, Cork,19, Mayo,19, and Donegal,19.
