About 27 staff members are expected to be affected when the Dunnes Stores outlet on West Street, Drogheda, Co. Louth closes its doors for the final time on October 31 — marking the end of more than 50 years of trading at the site.
The store is among Dunnes Stores’ earliest branches, and its founder, Ben Dunne, had strong ties to the town. He famously described his apprenticeship as a draper in Drogheda in 1926 as a “turning point” in his life.
Many employees, some with up to two decades of service, were said to be “shocked and disappointed” by the closure announcement, which was communicated by management on Monday.
It is understood staff have been told they may be redeployed to other local Dunnes Stores branches — including Scotch Hall, Colpe Cross, and the nearby clothing store in the town centre — though no final confirmation has been given.
Several workers expressed frustration that no formal meeting was held to deliver the news or address their concerns.
The closure has been described as “another blow to the town centre.”
