The Drogheda Cycling group has welcomed the proposals from Louth County Council for cycle lanes on both the Dublin Road and the roads around the M1 Retail Park.
The Council’s proposals for the Drogheda Active Travel Schemes Phase 3 include Active Travel facilities along:
- R168 Collon Road & R166 Northern Cross Route, (from Cement Rd northwards towards Hill of Rath Roundabout and east towards Rose Hall Roundabout) in Drogheda, Co. Louth
- R132 Dublin Road, (from MacBride Train Station to Southgate Roundabout) Drogheda, Co. Louth
“These developments represent another step forward in Drogheda’s journey away from car congestion and towards a healthier, safer, more sustainable future” said the group’s Chairperson, Noel Hogan.
“The Dublin Road proposals in particular are very encouraging given the number of schools that are located in the area.
“These proposals open up the possibility of children being allowed to walk or cycle in safety to their school each morning. For this reason we are encouraging the council to develop connecting cycle lanes from the Dublin road to nearby schools as a priority.”
“We will be engaging with the council to ensure that junctions along the route are well designed and that car encroachment on cycle lanes is discouraged. The safety of vulnerable road users, especially children, is our first priority.”

The project information, including study area maps and typical proposals, can be found on the Louth County Council consultation portal available from today, 19th February at:

An in-person consultation event at which the public can meet with the design team, will be held at the Drogheda Library Stockwell Lane on Thursday 22nd of February from 3pm to 7pm.
