Louth County Council have signed a €2.2 million contract with Jons Civil Engineering Co. Ltd to refurbish St. Dominic’s Bridge in Drogheda and to upgrade the cycling lanes and facilities on the bridge.
The works are being funded by the National Transport Authority through its Active Travel Investment Programme and O’Connor Sutton Cronin has been engaged as consultant engineers for the project.
The Bridge will be closed from 1st November 2021 for a period of six months. The Council regrets any inconvenience that the bridge closure will cause.
The bridge is a key link serving the Rathmullen Road and Ballsgrove Estates to the South of the River Boyne to the Town Centre and the improvement works will directly benefit cyclists and pedestrians.
St. Dominic’s Bridge is a pedestrian traffic bridge that spans the main channel of the River Boyne in Drogheda and is a key part of the town’s pedestrian traffic infrastructure. This project will deliver immediate benefits for cyclists, providing high quality cycle links to local schools, such as Marymount National School, shops, services, amenities and parks.
Additional aspects of the project will include new public lighting along the length of the cycle track, new surfacing and landscaping, strengthening of pier columns, the provision of a positive drainage system and a host of additional infrastructural refurbishments and improvements.
Cllr. Pio Smith, the Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said: “St. Dominic’s Bridge is a key feature of the town that provides an important link for pedestrian and cycling traffic.
“This project to make infrastructural refurbishments and develop the cycling facilities to and across the bridge will directly benefit cyclists and pedestrians in Drogheda and will improve the ability of residents in the town to partake in forms of active travel.“
