Council and Emergency Services unite to urge Safe Lifts Home this Christmas

Louth County Council has joined forces with the Fire and Rescue Service, An Garda Síochána and the National Ambulance Service to promote safer journeys this festive season through its ‘Gift of a Lift’ campaign.

The initiative urges people to offer a lift to friends or family during the busy Christmas party period or help them book a taxi to ensure everyone gets home safely. As part of the campaign, the Council has produced a free ‘Gift of a Lift’ card, available from all Louth Library branches or via download on the Council’s website.

Launching the campaign, Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said the message is simple: look out for one another.

“The festive season is a time for celebration, but also for care. A small gesture like offering a lift or arranging a taxi can make all the difference. This Christmas, give the gift of safety,” he said.

Sergeant Declan Higgins of the Louth Roads Policing Unit also welcomed the campaign and reminded road users to take extra caution over the coming weeks.

“Recent collisions have brought real heartbreak to families and communities. Gardaí will be carrying out roadside checks throughout the festive period. Please slow down, stay off your phone, never drive under the influence and remain alert on every journey. Initiatives like ‘Gift of a Lift’ help keep our loved ones safe,” he said.

Emergency services across the county are backing the call.
Joe Lumsden, Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer, said firefighters witness the devastating consequences of road crashes all too often.

“By arranging a safe lift or booking a taxi in advance, you’re helping reduce the risk of serious injury or death,” he said.

Tom Horwell, Assistant Chief Ambulance Officer with the National Ambulance Service, added that alcohol-related collisions remain a major concern at Christmas.

“Every year our crews respond to incidents where alcohol or poor decisions have played a part. Planning your journey and arranging a safe lift home is one of the easiest ways to prevent a 999 call,” he said.

Thomas McEvoy, Director of Service and Deputy Chief Executive of Louth County Council, said the card is a simple way to share an important message.

“Roads are busier and weather conditions can be challenging. By gifting a lift or organising a taxi, you’re helping someone get home safely and that’s something to celebrate,” he said.

The free ‘Gift of a Lift’ card is available now in all Louth Library Service branches and can also be downloaded from the Council’s website.
