Clogherhead RNLI volunteers sprang into action yesterday afternoon to assist a tired swimmer.
Around 2 pm, the swimmer began their journey around the Clogherhead Headland. Despite fair weather and good sea conditions, RNLI volunteers and members of the public soon noticed the swimmer struggling.
The all-weather lifeboat, Michael O’Brien, was promptly launched. Coxswain Gerard Sharkey led the crew, which included mechanic Barry Sharkey and crew members Carol Holdcroft, Derek Shevlin, Barbara Kirk, and Lisa Levins.
Upon reaching the swimmer, the crew brought them safely aboard and transported them to Port Oriel Harbour. There, they assessed the individual, who, though fatigued, did not require further medical attention.
Clogherhead RNLI Coxswain Gerard Sharkey commented on the rescue, stating, “We were happy to reach this swimmer before they became too exhausted and would like to wish them well.”
He also offered important safety advice for open water swimmers: “Open water swimming can be challenging, especially around headlands, where currents can be much stronger than expected. We would remind swimmers to always check the weather and tides beforehand, choose your swimming spot carefully, and never go alone – always swim with a buddy.”
Sharkey added, “Wear a bright-coloured cap and take a tow float. Swim within your depth and stay within your depth. If you get into trouble, float to live. If you get into difficulty or see someone in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
