The Wilkinstown Schools Pistol Cup was retained by Ruby Collins, student in Our Lads College Greenhills Drogheda. Ruby Collins (14) from Waterunder Drogheda, maintained her cool against a tough field with 26 competitors in total taking part from 19 different schools to win the cup.
The sport is Olympic Target Shooting and the cup is for the winner of the event of 10 metre Air Pistol. Each competitor had to take 30 time limited competition shots at a stationary target sized marginally larger than a CD/DVD from 10 metres away. Hitting the target at all has it’s own challenges, but the real aim is to hit the bullseye with a diameter of 11.5mm, roughly the size of a button on a shirt. At 10 meters this looks barely larger than a pin and competitors must muster all their mental and physical strength to keep their pistol straight, held single handedly at arms length, for each competition shot focusing on precision rather than just aim.
Ruby achieved a remarkable score of 273 out of a total possible 300 to take the top spot as she goes from strength to strength since first getting involved in the sport.
Supported by her coach Anthony Cooney, Ruby now firmly sets her sights on her debut international competition having been selected by the sport’s National Federation, Target Shooting Ireland, to compete as a junior athlete for the Irish team at the Intershoot competition in The Hague, Netherlands on 4th-8th February.
