Callan welcomes North Road bollards and repainting of disabled spaces

Independent Councillor Kevin Callan has successfully campaigned for Louth County Council to carry out a number of tasks related to road safety.

At his behest the Council installed safety bollards along the North Road in recent months along the route from the Cement Road to the Rosehall Roundabout.

“Pedestrians and cyclists in Drogheda need every possible protection as they take cars off the road and also need space to exercise freely and safety” Callan said.

“The North Road circuit is tremendously busy with walkers, joggers and cyclists and when I asked the council to review safety they made efforts to do so and this also is reflected in the active travel funding the council have succeeded in obtaining.

“In recent weeks I have also asked the council to make sure reflective strips marking the cyclist/pedestrian corridors are clearly visible, in particular after dark, and this has been done.

“Drogheda must continue to be a safe and welcoming place for those who want to exercise and travel by means other than a car and this project has been one step in the right direction, I will continue to work with the council on any such initiative.

Disabled Parking Spaces repainting underway in town

Meanwhile, the ever vigilant Councillor Callan has been campaigning to have all disabled bays in Drogheda repainted and he is delighted to see the work get underway across the town.

He first raised the issue at the end of Covid Restrictions where, due to works not being done, a number of the bays had worn away and could not be identified by motorists.

“These spaces are extremely important for anyone who requires them, in particular at our town centre area and in our public park spaces” Callan said. “People need access to shopping, pharmacies, doctors and all of other relevant services and it is firstly difficult to locate a space, then to find someone has parked in it because it’s not clear it’s designated. It’s an intolerable situation.

When Cllr Callan first raised the issue he asked the council to undertake a survey of all existing spaces in the town which includes all public spaces and those linked to residential properties.

I was grateful to see the council respond positively to my request and to carry out the survey and create a proper assessment of the work to be done. The first of the spaces are now starting to be done and I will continue to work with the Council until we have the spaces marked that need repainting.

Councillor Callan has asked anyone who has a residential bay, a bay they use in the town centre area or indeed if someone has a neighbour who has a bay that needs repainting to email him at Kevin.callan@louthcoco.ie
