At yesterday’s Drogheda Borough meeting Independent Councillor Kevin Callan raised his concerns for the welfare of animals including horses at the old cement quarry and an adjacent site beside the North Road in Drogheda.
He asked Louth County Council to get their veterinary officer to inspect the site at the top of Mell and running over to the North Road.
Councillor Callan’s call came after recent reports that a horse had died on the site after some possible neglect issues in recent weeks as highlighted by animal welfare groups.
Callan said that there are a number of gates and access points around the site and that on Sunday morning he had questioned a person taking horses off the site on the North Road.
“I have concerns about animal welfare on the site with multiple horses throughout the complex” he said. “There have been reliable reports of a horse that died on site recently and local animal welfare volunteers have raised concerns.”
He pointed out that there are multiple entry points and by the looks of it a number of people putting animals out on the site. He asked the council to have officials from the veterinary section visit the site and establish just what is going on.
Council senior engineer, Mark Johnston said he would ask the council’s vet to link in with the environment section which operates the old landfill site.
Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Callan said that his concern was animal welfare, the site needs to be accessed to inspect this issue and we need to work out who has access and exit through these gates that there are padlocking.
“If the council are not locking these gates, who is?” he asked.
