With more cold weather forecast for the coming days, Independent Councillor Kevin Callan has asked Louth County Council to upgrade their road and footpath gritting programme.
Councillor Callan wants the Council to add extra routes to be gritted in the interests of providing clear routes and pedestrian pathways in and around Drogheda.
“The last few days have shown the importance of safe routes where we have the initial frost and then black ice which is extremely dangerous as it is not clearly visible” he pointed out.
Callan said that he has been speaking with motorists, bus operators and residents of estates such as Marian Park and Ballsgrove where there is a hilly route in and out of town and has urged that gritting be carried out in areas such as Grove Hill and Bottle Lane as well as steps such as Watery Hill.
“It is clear that salting and gritting would be a serious help to assisting people keep walking to and from work, shops and to get to buses and the train station” he said.
“An additional or supplementary gritting programme would make a tremendous difference to a person who needs to drive or walk to work or to get to the shops.”
