Drogheda Cycling Group members are getting into the swing of Halloween this Saturday evening with a “Spooks and Spokes” Community Ride starting at the North Road Pharmacy at 6.00pm and they’re hoping you will join in.
This is your opportunity to dress up, illuminate your bike, and yourself, and get to know the town in a different light. That’s if dare!
Over the past couple of years the Drogheda Cycling Group has been campaigning for safer cycling facilities in Drogheda and they’ve had some considerable success in raising the profile of cycling as a means of transport.
Their campaign feeds into similar campaigns throughout the country and has led to many new stretches of cycling lanes being constructed along existing roads and their inclusion on all new development plans.
In the past few days alone the final touches are being put to the new pedestrian and cycle path over the railway bridge at Colpe which up until now had been a very busy and very dangerous spot for cyclists and pedestrians.
As local TD Fergus O’Dowd said, this particular development will allow much safer movement for students and local pedestrians.
The next stage will hopefully be the extension of the route to all of the local schools so that children can make their own way to school in safety using a dedicated network of cycling/walking routes.
It’s not rocket science but up until recently it seems that the motor car was king in Ireland, especially rural areas, and many of our roads were built with no footpaths let alone cycle ways.
So now local authorities are faced with the problems of retrofitting facilities for walking and cycling is of course more expensive and bothersome but that is the price of decades of poor planning.
Important: You will not be allowed to take part in this event without lights! Please ensure your bike is equipped with at least one white front light and one red backlight.
Wear a hi-vis vest or a jacket and a helmet!
