Art meets science live online at Highlanes

Having moved their public programme activity online, Highlanes Gallery, and a host of artists, art historians, others, as well as audiences from children to adults have been connecting and engaging in old ideas, new ideas, expressions, forms and finding creativity and dynamism and even social connection is still possible now.

Aoife Ruane, Highlanes Gallery Director says “there has been an overwhelming positive response to the programme with people returning each week for the Collection Thoughts, Collection Talks series on Thursday’s at 11am, and where last week three artists spoke from as far away as snowy, blizzardy Brooklyn, and Dublin and London, and where Raphael Hynes 3 week evening drawing workshop, was booked out and drew people from Drogheda and Kilkenny, something that would not have been possible if it was this time last year.”

“Our mid-term workshops were also fully subscribed and our very first art-inspired, food workshop, would have brought a tear to a glass eye, as children, young people, with some help from parents, took part in a creative cook along from their busy kitchens, while Turlach McKeown, co-owner and chef of our onsite café, Five Good Things, rustled up French Toast from his mobile kitchen live from the gallery!”

Some eggsambles from the kitchens!

And they’re expecting another busy week ahead with artists facilitating & sharing ideas and insight into their practice. On Tuesday, Heather Griffin and Patrick Mulvihill who worked on the co-creation project for the Highlanes run of the Science Gallery’s exhibition PLASTIC and A Giant Leap, facilitate a 3 hour session (12-3pm) where participants imagine Drogheda 2069 but where the present and past is considered – will guilds re-emerge as the power brokers in this near-future techno space age?

Later in the week, on Thursday at 11am, artist Niamh McGuinne beams live from her studio in Dublin and discuss the recently acquired work, Peripheral to the Collection and puts it in the context of recent and new work…all are free, with pre-booking required here https://highlanes.ie/whats-on/events/
