The Blue Flag Clogherhead beach narrowly failed to get a clean status bill of health from An Taisc during a summer visit.
It’s observer found the area moderately littered and it was one of three out of 33 that failed to get a clean classification as such.
The survey was carried out in June and July for Irish Business Against Litter by the national heritage trust.
The report was largely positive noting improvements on the litter front and far more critical of the number of dogs roaming around Clogherhead beach.
It stated;”The overall impression created at Clogherhead was a very positive one with a virtual absence of litter, despite high numbers on a visit on a warm/sunny day.
“Apart from some short-lie litter at the base of the back gate at the entrance to the gate, the remainder of the area presented very well with regards to litter.
“It would seem that the general waste and recycling are well maintained . Signage from “The Beach Hug” asks the public:” If these bins are full please bring your rubbish home and help keep our beautiful beach clean.
A great fundraising initiative is the large, industrial sized bin with signage indicating Bottle and Can Only. Deposit Return, All proceeds going to Clogherhead Development.
“Despite the Blue Flag beach flying and dogs not allowed on the beach during the day of the Blue Flag season , a considerable number of dogs were observed, both walking and running freely. Perhaps more signage is required to create greater awareness of this rule?”
