Last Saturday Darragh Ó Héiligh founder of Music at the Gate and now a member along with Oisin Dillon of the duo Dabilla, put out a call for Louth GAA fans to take part in the recording of a video to celebrate the Wee County’s success in the Leinster Championship.
Thankfully there was a big enough turn out on Saturday to make a fantastic audio and video recording for the song and the final version will be released tomorrow so we can all have the song in our heads for the match in the All Ireland Series this weekend against Monaghan in Newbridge.
In the run up to the Leinster Final, a proud Louth man and poet, Anthony Matthews, put into words how much this wonderful achievement by The Louth Senior team meant to him and he penned a poem aiming to inspire the entire county to get behind the team with a new song.
While strains of “Red is The Rose” and “The Red Rose Cafe rang” out from the shores of Carlingford Lough to the banks of The Boyne. We don’t really have a modern song to unite behind. Which is probably understandable since Elvis, who was only starting out, was Top of the Charts in 1957.
So it was fantastic to see so many passionate Louth supporters who believed in this spirit come to The O’Raghaillaigh’s last Saturday for a very unique occasion. While there wasn’t the massive turnout that was hoped for but with such short notice, Communion season and The Foreign Sports Final the organisers were delighted to see so many families, some with three generations present, singing their hearts and souls out.
It’s been an incredible season so far and it’s not just the Men’s Senior Team under Ger Brennan and Captain Sam Mulroy that have been giving us something to shout and sing about.
A huge credit goes to everyone involved in underage successes of the Minor, U20’s and The Louth Ladies triumph winning the Junior Leinster Title. Everyone at the County Board that has soldiered for this success deserves a huge pat on the back from us all.
The song carries a beautiful air and catchy chorus that captures those quintessential GAA moments on a balmy summer evening cheering on any of your teams be it club or county.
So sing it Loud and Sing it Proud!
“Hear the Voices of the Crowd, Stand Up and Do us Proud!
The organisers were particularly grateful for the support of The Mayor, Paddy McQuillan, Senator Alison Comyn, LMFM, Drogheda Life, Karen Smyth Photography and especially the hospitality shown by everyone from The O’Raghaillaigh’s who were fantastic hosts on the day.
