Aontú representative Michael O’Dowd has expressed concerns over a shortage of healthcare professionals, especially doctors, in Drogheda which is being exacerbated by the increase in the town’s population.
The issue came to light when a distressed individual, preparing to care for a family member moving from Dublin, found it challenging to access routine medical services in Drogheda.
Calling for urgent attention to address the healthcare needs of the community, O’Dowd said that after reaching out to over 20 medical practices in the Drogheda area, he discovered that none were able to accept new patients.
“Reasons for this included doctors leaving existing practices and an influx of new residents, exacerbated by ongoing construction on the Northside of Drogheda. This population growth has not been met with a corresponding increase in essential healthcare services” he said.
”The shortage of doctors in Drogheda is a significant concern, and immediate action is required. Steps should be taken to ensure that residents, especially those facing urgent healthcare needs, have access to the necessary services.
“To address this crisis, the HSE must develop and implement a comprehensive plan. Possible measures include incentivizing healthcare professionals to establish practices in the area, facilitating the recruitment of additional medical staff, and exploring innovative solutions to meet the growing healthcare demands.
“Additionally, it’s crucial for Louth County Council to be aware of this problem and plan accordingly. Drogheda should be recognized as a Strategic Development Zone, allowing for coordinated planning and delivery of both social and economic infrastructure to meet the needs of the growing community.”
