The LMFM presenter Ken Murray has co-written a new book on the 1975 Miami Showband Massacre which left three of Ireland’s most famous musicians dead.
Called My Saxophone Saved My Life it tells the story of Des Lee, one of the band members who survived that infamous and horrific night in what was regarded as one of the worst attacks of the then Troubles in the north.
Ken, who lives in Duleek and hosts the Agenda Show every day, claims in the book that undercover British Army Officer Captain Robert Nairac, helped organise the killings along with paramilitaries.
The band were stopped as they drove home at a fake British Army checkpoint. Des Lee believes Nairac was present on the night of the murders.
He and bandmate Stephen Travers survived while lead singer Fran O’Toole, Tony Geragphty and Brian McCoy, all perished.
Two paramilitaries at the scene were also killed when a bomb prematurely exploded.
Three UVF terrorists were subsequently convicted and jailed for life for the atrocity.
Nairac himself was later abducted and murdered by the IRA and his body never found . He is believed to have been buried in Ravensdale, Dundalk not far from the border.
Ken and Des’ book is published by Red Stripe Press and is available in bookshops nationwide for 19.99 euros.
The official launch of the book takes place on Monday, July 28, in Hodges Figgis, Dublin with Fr Brian D’arcy doing the honours.
Ken has invited a large contingent from Drogheda to the event.
