Two men have been arrested after component parts and suspected explosive material were seized during a Garda operation in Co Louth today, Friday, 23rd October.
The search was carried out as part of a long-running investigation by the Garda Special Detective Unit and was assisted by a Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.
A man in his 50s and another in his 20s were arrested as part of the investigation.
Both are currently being detained at Garda stations in the north-east under the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly described the seizure as a significant development in the investigation.
“This is a particularly significant find. This search and arrest operation by our counter-terrorism unit, the Special Detective Unit (SDU), demonstrates the important work carried out by Garda national security personnel every day to protect people on this island,” he said.
“It also shows that we must continue to degrade and dismantle the threat from those who are intent on destroying peace by harming others.”
Commissioner Kelly said he had been in contact with PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher on Friday morning and said co-operation between the two police services in relation to dissident groups was continuing.
He also thanked the Defence Forces for its assistance during the search operation.
